Mass production of Rhodopseudomonas palustris as diet for aquaculture

چکیده
Three different types of anaerobic fermentations were used for the mass production of the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris as diet for aquaculture. The optimum agitation speed and malate concentration were 300 r.p.m. and 0.2% in the modified MYC medium, respectively. In batch fermentations of R. palustris, the maximum number of viable cells was 1.1×10 c.f.u. ml with 2.65 g l of DCW, and the maximum specific growth rate and biomass productivity were estimated to be 0.12 h and 55 mg l h, respectively. Crude protein content of R. palustris was about 72–74%. The composition of stearic acid and oleic acid of R. palustris was superior to those of Chlorella and yeasts, while that of other fatty acids tested was not. The amino acid profiles of the protein hydrolysate compared favorably with Food Agricultural Organization (FAO) guidelines. The biomass productivities from fed-batch experiments were found to be 50, 47 and 49 mg l h for linear, exponential, and sigmoidal feeding strategy, respectively. The maximum biomass productivity was found to be 112 mg l h in chemostat. Compared to growth in batch cultures, continuous fermentation yielded two times higher biomass productivity. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Potential early intermediates in anaerobic benzoate degradation by Rhodopseudomonas palustris.
Alkali-treated extracts of Rhodopseudomonas palustris growing photosynthetically on benzoate were examined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry for partially reduced benzoate derivatives. Two cyclic dienes, cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1-carboxylate and cyclohexa-1,4-diene-1-carboxylate, were detected. Either compound supported cell growth as effectively as benzoate. These results suggest that these ...

UNLABELLED Rhodopseudomonas palustris is an alphaproteobacterium that has served as a model organism for studies of photophosphorylation, regulation of nitrogen fixation, production of hydrogen as a biofuel, and anaerobic degradation of aromatic compounds. This bacterium is able to transition between anaerobic photoautotrophic growth, anaerobic photoheterotrophic growth, and aerobic heterotroph...

Rhodopseudomonas palustris strain 42OL was isolated in 1973 from a sugar refinery waste treatment pond. The strain has been prevalently used for hydrogen production processes using a wide variety of waste-derived substrates, and cultured both indoors and outdoors, either freely suspended or immobilized. R. palustris 42OL was suitable for many other applications and capable of growing in very di...
متن کاملMetabolic engineering of Rhodopseudomonas palustris for the obligate reduction of n-butyrate to n-butanol
BACKGROUND Rhodopseudomonas palustris is a versatile microbe that encounters an innate redox imbalance while growing photoheterotrophically with reduced substrates. The resulting excess in reducing equivalents, together with ATP from photosynthesis, could be utilized to drive a wide range of bioconversions. The objective of this study was to genetically modify R. palustris to provide a pathway ...
متن کاملElectricity generation by Rhodopseudomonas palustris DX-1.
Bacteria able to generate electricity in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are of great interest, but there are few strains capable of high power production in these systems. Here we report that the phototrophic purple nonsulfur bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris DX-1, isolated from an MFC, produced electricity at higher power densities (2720 +/- 60 mW/m2) than mixed cultures in the same device. Wh...
